Running a job

JobFiles for Network Collections, Extractions and SharePoint Collections can be created using the Collector Wizard and then saved for a later execution time.

To run a Collector JobFile:

Run Nuix Collector.

From the File menu, choose Open and open the JobFile you previously prepared.

Processing will begin immediately – except for jobs which perform a deletion. Deletion jobs will issue a confirmation prompt before they begin.

Note: You can also run Nuix Collector with a command-line parameter to specify the JobFile to run. Such jobs always run without any confirmation prompts. See topic Nuix Collector Command-Line Parameters for details.

Portable collection devices or network shares include a JobFile as well as the Nuix Collector Portable program. Some portable collections must also contain sufficient free disk space to hold the results of the collection.

Portable collections are typically executed by the custodian who is responsible for the data being collected.

To run a Portable Collection from a Network Share:

Access the network share via the console/terminal or via a graphical file manager.

On Windows, this may require opening Windows Explorer, File Explorer or a command prompt, then specifying a UNC path and share credentials.

On Linux and Mac, this may require opening a terminal session and mounting the share as a mount point.

Run the script in the root of the share, using administrative privileges.

On Windows, run the script RunMe.bat. On Windows 7 and newer, right-click this file and choose Run as Administrator.

On Linux or macOS, run the script RunCollection.sh. Use the sudo command to run the script with root user privileges.

When the portable collection is done, disconnect or dismount from the network share (only if you had to take explicit steps to access it in Step 1).

To run a Portable Collection or Portable Disk Collection from an External Device:

Ship the portable collection device to the designated custodian at the remote location, if necessary. The designated custodian or other user must then complete the remaining steps.

Connect the external device to the computer on which the collection will run.

On Windows, a drive letter will typically be assigned automatically to the external device.

On Linux and Mac, this may require opening a terminal session and mounting the external device as a mount point.

Run the script in the root of the share, using administrative privileges.

On Windows, run the script RunMe.bat. On Windows 7 and newer, right-click this file and choose Run as Administrator. Windows may instead automatically prompt you to run the script after the external device is connected.

On Linux or macOS, run the script RunCollection.sh. Use the sudo command to run the script with root user privileges.

Depending on the portable job's configuration, you may be prompted to select source folders, volumes or disks to be collected.

If so prompted, you will also have the option to enter free-form notes. These notes may appear in the Summary Report – if the portable job is configured to include them.

Depending on the portable job's configuration, you may be prompted to select the destination where the collection will be saved, along with any log files or reports.

Note: Destination folders must reside on a volume or network share which has sufficient space to store the entire collection. The Destination folder can reside on the portable collection device.
The sources to be collected must not include the parent folder and volume where the Destination folder resides.

When the portable collection is done, disconnect or dismount the external device.

Pack and ship the external device back to the collection administrator, if applicable.
