Upgrade Nuix Workstation

This section covers:

How to download the latest version

Why you must migrate cases from earlier versions

Prerequisites before migrating cases

There are no specific requirements for updating or upgrading your version of Nuix Workstation. However, the following are important to note:

You can find the latest versions of all Nuix products on our Nuix Customer Portal.

You can install later major or minor versions of Nuix Workstation alongside earlier versions on the same machine, if they are beyond v7.0.0. Also, see the note under Download the latest version.

Cases are version-specific and to open a case in a later version of Nuix Workstation, you need to migrate that case to that later version.

It is advised to back up any cases before migrating to the latest version, as the migration process is irreversible.

Download the latest version

To download the latest version of Nuix Workstation:

Access the Nuix Customer Portal and click the Nuix Products link.

On the Nuix Products Downloads page, against the Nuix Workstation row, click the Download here link.

On the Nuix Workstation Releases page, scroll down to the Installers heading.

Depending on the operating system you have, click one of the following links:

Installer for Windows 64-bit

Package for Debian/Ubuntu Linux 64-bit

Portable tar for Linux 64-bit

Then, under Third-Party Dependency Downloads, as needed, download one or more of the Addons if you require later versions of these.

If the later version is just a change of build number (for example, when upgrading from 9.10.1 to 9.10.11), then the later version will overwrite the previous installation (so it is not maintained in tandem with the newer version).

Also, be aware that program shortcuts in default locations are also overwritten, so any applied switches may be lost.

Why you must migrate cases from earlier versions

When you launch a more current version of Nuix Workstation, the application opens listing all your existing cases. Then, when you try to open a case created in an earlier version, Nuix Workstation automatically prompts you to migrate the case to the later version. Why the need to migrate? Because while the data itself does not need to change, the database schemas do.

A huge amount of database actions are performed during a case migration and one small network dropout could corrupt and invalidate your case. If this occurs, restore the backup to the original Nuix version and begin the upgrade or migration again.

Depending on the size of the case, this process can take some time and is irreversible, so Nuix recommends that you always back up your Nuix cases before migrating them to the latest version.

If you experience issues with your case migrations, do reach out to your Nuix account manager or to Nuix Support.

Prerequisites before migrating cases

Before migrating your current case evidence, Nuix advises you observe the following:

Ensure that the case is not being shared in Nuix Management Server.

Always perform a backup prior to migration.

Do not delete the backup initially because case numbering can change in some instances.

Ensure you have sufficient permissions to perform the upgrade and access the related case data, folders, directories, and so forth. Do not perform a migration of cases on a network.

Only perform a migration of cases on a local fixed drive.

Note: In the unlikely event of an unsuccessful migration, slowly upgrade through the major (or minor) stable versions of Nuix Workstation.

Note: If upgrading to the latest version of Nuix Workstation from v7.0.0 or earlier, Nuix recommends that you do so incrementally, by installing a bridging version, perhaps v8.x, before installing a v9.x. This is because the bigger the gulf between versions, the higher the chance that a migration may not complete successfully.
