What is redaction?

Redaction is the process of editing text for publication. It is used to censor or obscure sensitive information that needs to be hidden for legal or security purposes.

In legal documents, redaction involves removing, masking or deleting privileged or confidential information.

What are the benefits of redacting data?

You can, as needed, mask individual names or recurring pieces of information, phrases, larger parts of sentences, or whole paragraphs.

Once a document is produced with redacted information, it cannot be undone by the receiver. In other words, the process is irreversible, even for the instigator of the redaction, when produced in PDF form.

One of the extra benefits of redacting in Nuix products is that you can create redactions in Nuix Investigate and Nuix Workstation and also export them from Nuix Automation.

Who needs to redact information?

Personnel in legal firms frequently need to redact documents. However, many other commercial entities and government organizations also exchange documents with redacted content.

In Nuix Workstation, redaction is used as part of compiling a legal load file for export between one legal entity or government organization and another. It also allows you to open and view previously redacted documents.

How do you redact data in Nuix Workstation?

In Nuix Workstation you redact:

Individual documents- from the Results view by right-clicking selected items and in the Preview pane selecting the Printed Image tab. See Redact and export individual items with new markups for details.

Multiple documents in a case if you have an e-Discovery license - from the Items menu by selecting Bulk Redaction. See Mark up and redact items in bulk for details.

This function is not available for Nuix Investigation & Response or Nuix Law Enforcement Plus add-on licenses.

Before you redact data, to prepare for redacting any text, you need to Create or edit a Markup Set. After redacting, you might want to export the results. See Export redacted items for details.
